More from the Whitepaper

You can trace much of the genesis of manufacturing in Guanajuato to the early-to-mid 1990s, when first Carlos Medina and then Vicente Fox served as Governor of Guanajuato. Fox later became President of Mexico, but it was Medina who took initial steps to strengthen the transportation and logistical infrastructure, as well as fund and enhance the training and education initiatives that would be essential to Guanajuato’s manufacturing growth. This effort bore fruit when General Motors launched operations in the state in 1995. Today, Mazda, Honda, Pirelli and Volkswagen are among the key auto producers with manufacturing in Guanajuato. In 2017, exports topped $24 billion.

Much of Guanajuato’s manufacturing success is due to a well-trained and productive workforce. A plan was devised in the 1990s by the Guanajuato government, emphasizing a long-term approach featuring public-private partnerships to train technicians and engineers. The region now has over 50 training centers and academic institutions. Many of the world’s leading OEMs, Tier One and Two manufacturers collaborate with IECA (the state’s training and education entity), to provide customized on-the-job manufacturing processes and techniques like Lean manufacturing, before heading into the workforce fulltime.

Guanajuato’s robust, modern transport infrastructure is also a huge advantage for international manufacturers and investors. From international airports to an extensive network of motorways and nearby port access, manufactures are able to get their engineers, parts and finished goods in and out of Guanajuato seamlessly. This infrastructure has led to further opportunities for foreign investment. Companies such as Spectrum, HP, Bosch and Rheinmetal Defence call Guanajuato home. The region’s diversity and cultural richness is evidenced in the state’s four major cities: Celaya (home to Entrada’s manufacturing campus), Irapuato, Leon and Salamanca.

Guanajuato is growing fast as an industrial powerhouse and attractor of foreign direct investment. The area has a bright future and offers many amazing opportunities to international manufacturers seeking growth.
