Best Value for Offshore Manufacturing
in Northern Mexico
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this colonial gem was one of
the richest and most productive silver mining centers in New Spain.
Today, known for its political, social, and labor stability, Zacatecas
is both the capital and second largest city in the Mexican State of Zacatecas.
Nearly 500,000 people live within a 30-mile radius of the city. The quality
of life and standard of living are high in Zacatecas. The weather’s
wonderful year-round; neither air conditioning nor heating are needed.
Five-star hotels, golf courses and tennis clubs, within master-planned
communities, provide residents and tourists alike with an excellent lifestyle
that includes rich arts and cultural opportunities. Zacatecas has been
enjoyed by many international companies, including the Delphi Corp. over
the last ten years. On top of all that, Zacatecas boasts the lowest crime
rate in the country.
Significant Cost Savings
The cost of labor in Zacatecas is considerably less than the border cities
and the other cities of northern Mexico. In fact, many of the operating
costs are less here.
- Facility and utility expenses are low because mild weather creates
minimal need for HVAC systems.
- Management costs are less because of a lower cost of living.
- Turnover costs are less because of the abundant supply of workers
desiring to continue to live in the region.
Ideal Location and Easy Access
Zacatecas is approximately 400 miles south-west of Laredo, Texas, the
most active port of international trade between the United States and
Mexico. In addition, Zacatecas is:
- Located within 4 hours of most major OEM’s and ISO registered
suppliers in Mexico.
- Ideally located and inexpensive distribution center for clients located
in Mexico.
- International airport access (with direct flights from Los Angeles,
Denver, and Chicago).
- Easily accessible, by modern highways, to all of Mexico and the United
States.
- Dependable and reasonably priced carrier access. (Loaded semis typically
depart from Zacatecas at midnight and are at the border in time to cross
at first light).
Education and Training
The State of Zacatecas sponsors many programs to train workers for industrial
jobs. Last year, 6,000 young Mexicans received training and were granted
over 13,000 technical sponsorships. The State has five technological institutes
and four universities, offering numerous professional degrees.Located
in or near the city of Zacatecas:
- The University of Zacatecas, offering graduate and undergraduate degrees
in many subjects, including engineering and medicine.
- A campus of the Technological Institute of Monterrey, known as The
MIT of Mexico.
- The Polytechnic Institute of Zacatecas, which offers a B.S. in Engineering.
- The Technological Institute of Zacatecas, a two-year vocational school
with more than 3,000 students on its two campuses.
- The Technological Institute of Fresnillo, a two-year vocational school
with 1,000 students.
